Emergency Response Plan

emergencyThe new Occupational Health and Safety Code requires employers to have written Emergency Response Plans! The purpose of an emergency response plan is to ensure the safety of employees, contractors and visitors to the site at all times during any emergency. In addition, an effective plan must:

  • Reduce the potential for causing property damage or further losses from production stoppages
  • Assist response personnel to determine and perform remedial actions quickly and effectively
  • Reduce the effects to the environment
  • Reduce recovery times and costs
  • Create confidence in the response personnel and other employees on site

BCL has assisted numerous organizations to prepare for the unexpected through the development of an Emergency Response Plan. Upon completion of the Plan you will be provided with the following:

  1. A plan that encompasses the risks associated with the organization being reviewed.
  2. Color map(s) of the site outlining all of the emergency equipment such as fire extinguishers, eye wash stations and first aid kit locations, as well as designated meeting area in the case of an evacuation situation. These maps should be posted throughout the facility to serve as a constant reminder.
  3. Color map(s) of the site outlining the locations and quantities of all the hazardous materials found on site. These maps are excellent tools to provide to the local fire department for their records, in the case of a situation where they are required to respond.
  4. List of applicable emergency contact numbers including after hours notification procedures. As part of this, a chart is prepared to outline the various reporting requirements depending on the situation. For example, Occupational Health and Safety may need to be notified if an injury results in an employee being hospitalized for more than two days.
