Air Quality Sampling is correctly classified as Occupational Hygiene. This service entails sampling and/or monitoring for airborne chemicals and particulates that have the potential to cause adverse health related side effects.

Results obtained can be compared to allowable daily exposure levels, established in the Occupational Health and Safety Code.

The new Occupational Health and Safety Code requires employers to have written Emergency Response Plans! The purpose of an emergency response plan is to ensure the safety of employees, contractors and visitors to the site at all times during any emergency. In addition, an effective plan must:

• Reduce the potential for causing property damage or further losses from production stoppages
• Assist response personnel to determine and perform remedial actions quickly and effectively

Beyond an employer’s moral obligation, Alberta ’s Occupational Health and Safety Act,is very specific regarding First Aid requirements of every employer. The Act establishes minimum standards only. Many employers realize that this is not enough.

Under the current Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Code, all employees exposed to higher than 85 decibels over an eight hour day are considered to be "noise exposed workers". Employees exposed to 90 decibels or higher during an eight-hour day must also be given audiometric testing by a Certified Audiometric Technician or Audiologist within six months of starting with the employer. Subsequently, testing must be done every two years if they are still employed in a noise-exposed area. Any employees found to have abnormal hearing or abnormal shifts in hearing from one test year to another must then be referred to an Audiologist for further investigation.
